The IB diploma course
This course covers two years (corresponding to the second and third years of the Danish Gymnasium). Students choose a subject from each of the following groups:
- Group 1: Language A1 (mother-tongue or most familiar language)
- Group 2: Language A2, B or ab initio (foreign language)
- Group 3: Individual and Society (social sciences)
- Group 4: Experimental sciences (science and natural science)
- Group 5: Mathematics
- Group 6: Arts and Electives (art or a subject from Group 2, 3 or 4).
The following subjects are obligatory for all students:
- An Extended Essay, where the pupil writes in depth on a subject of his or her choice
- Theory of Knowledge
- Creativity, Action and Service.
The six groups cover areas of the humanities, of the social sciences and of science, and their subjects embrace both depth and breadth. The creative element is represented by Creativity, Action and Service. Depth of treatment is assured by choosing 3 (or at the most 4) subjects at high level, and by the pupil in the Extended Essay producing a serious piece of work of about 4,000 words).
Examinations in the six chosen subjects are written. In languages there are also oral examinations. Examinations are in English, with the obvious exception of the other language subjects. Marks of from 1 to 7 are given in each of the six chosen subjects, with 7 as the highest mark. Three bonus points are given for the Extended Essay and for Theory of Knowledge. A sum total of 24 for marks and bonus points is required to get the Diploma. Students failing to get a full Diploma will get a Certificate stating the results, and can be re-examined in the following examination period if they want to obtain a full Diploma.
