The Pre-IB is a one-year preparatory course for Danish and foreign students who have not completed 11 years of school. The language of instruction is English, as are the teaching materials. The pre-IB year is divided into two terms. The first term is a foundation course, which is an English variant of the foundation course offered in the Danish Studentereksamen at Nyborg Gymnasium. The second term offers a greater focus on subjects preparing the students for the IB Diploma Programme, as well as complying with the requirements set by the Danish Ministry of Education, in relation to the first year of studies in the Danish ‘Studenter’exam.
Subjects in the pre-IB year
The pre-IB year follows the requirements set for the Danish 1.g year – but the instruction and teaching materials are in English. This means that the students will meet a row of subjects and cross-disciplinary subjects. The first term (from August till December) is a foundation course, where the aim is to prepare the students to become independent, critical thinkers. The students will meet different methods and ways of working and will be required to work on projects and in groups, as well as participating in more traditional class instruction. After the basic course, in the spring term (January till June), students will follow a specific line of study ensuring the students a broad knowledge of the subject areas, which are relevant in the IB Diploma Programme. The line of study followed in the spring term follows the requirements for the Danish line of study with the focus on English, Maths and Social Science, along with a broad palette of other subjects required to get a solid introduction to the subject areas taught within the IB. When the students have completed the pre-IB course, they will also obtain Danish C-level certificates in for instance two natural science subjects.
